Effect of Hyaluronic Acid on the Phagocytic Function of Reticuloendothelial System in Rats.

Abstract
The present experiment was designed to investigate the effects of hyaluronic acid on the phagocytic function of reticuloendothelial system in rats. The phagocytic activity was assessed by carbon clearance method after subcutaneous administration of hyaluronic acid (0.2mg/100mg of body weight)
The obtained results were as follows ;
The phagocytic activity showed an increased level from the first day and continued through the fifth day after injection, and the maximum increase was reached on the third day.
Thereafter it decreased gradually to the normal level by the seventh day.
From these results and consideration of literatures it may be concluded that hyaluronic acid is an agent increasing host mechanism against bacterial infection and metabolism of various compounds via the increase of phagocytic activity of RES.
